Summary

It is the third day and the boy takes the chieftains and the alchemist to the same cliff where he had sat the entire second day. He tells them it may take awhile and then he begins to speak silently to the desert itself. The desert asks why he has returned to stare at him again and Santiago tells the desert that he needs its help to return to Fatima. When the desert asks Santiago what love is, the boy tells it that love is the falcon's flight over its sands. The desert creates game for the falcon to eat and the falcon then nourishes man and man will eventually nourish the sands and the game will once again flourish. It is the way life goes. The desert then promises Santiago that he will give him his sands to help, but that he must ask the wind itself.

Then, a breeze begins to blow and touches the boy's face while the alchemist smiles knowingly. The boy asks.......
