Chapter 10

Katniss is shocked with the way Peeta acted. Everyone around her starts freaking out. Haymitch announces that this is Peeta’s way of warning them that an attack on District 13 is bound to happen soon. President Coin thinks this is not possible, but orders people to prepare as if an attack is bound to happen just to be on the safe side. Katniss experiences the extreme measure that District 13 does in order to protect everybody. They’re all required to check in electronically. Plutarch tells her that she must appear calm and collected, as people will be looking to her for courage.

Once everybody goes to their assigned zones, the attack on District 13 starts. Peeta was right—the Capitol was indeed planning to attack. Katniss draws closer to her family for comfort during the attack. President Coin announces that everybody should stay in their places until the attack is finished. Katniss’ mother leaves to go to the medical area. She starts talking with her sister. Prim admitted that she wants to get medical training to be able to help out. The sisters realize that Peeta is the last tool that the Capitol has against Katniss and was willing to use him in every way possible to break her.

Notes:
The Capitol finally decides to attack District 13 to send a message. Peeta was most probably tortured further after warning them about the bombing.

Chapter 11

It took several days for the attacks on District 13 to stop. Katniss and Finnick meet up in the middle of the night to discuss tactics. She realizes that the Capitol is using the same strategy that they used on Finnick: destroying a loved one to drive her crazy. He tells her that she can try and tie knots on a rope so she can cope with the stress. The next day, they all go to the Special Defense area where they meet up with Boggs and Gale, along with the authorities of District 13. They learn that they need to go above ground to see the damage inflicted by the attacks so they can use it as a backdrop for the next propos.

They move all over the area and realize that Peeta did the district a great favor by warning them of the attack. While trekking back to the Justice Building, they find a bunch of roses on the ground, with Katniss immediately knowing that it’s another message from President Snow. Katniss feels so upset that she burst into tears while filming the next propos. She freaks out about what might happen to Peeta and gets drugged to be calmed down. Once she wakes up, Haymitch explains to her what happened while she was asleep. The rebels are going to the Capitol to save Peeta, as well as Annie, Finnick’s sweetheart. He then admits that Boggs and Gale are part of the group that went to the rescue mission.

Chapter 12

Katniss realizes that she might lose both Gale and Peeta during the rescue. Haymitch offers to have her drug, which she refuses to do as she’s been drugged so many times during the week. She becomes upset that she couldn’t come with the others to the rescue mission. In the mean time, she and Finnick were told to film another propos; this time, showing the damage done to District 13. They wanted to provide a distraction from the departure of the rebels. Katniss changes her tactics and decides to talk about her history with Peeta instead. She says that the Capitol is in great danger because they can no longer use Peeta against her any longer.

With Plutarch and Haymitch’s encouragement, Finnick decides to speak up. Finnick tells the truth about how President snow prostituted him to famous and wealthy people from the Capitol. He mentions that what he knows could be damaging to those people, as well as for President Snow. Finnick finishes his bit by mentioning about how Snow is actually a murderer. Everyone is shocked with what Finnick said in front of the cameras. After filming wraps up, Haymitch and Katniss got talking. Haymitch told her about how President Snow killed everyone he loved right after he came out of the games. Hours later, Haymitch announces that the rescue team has returned from the rescue. Katniss and Finnick head over to the medical area where they took the rescued people, as well as the injured rebels. They see Johanna, a tribute who appears to be in bad shape, Gale, who’s been injured. Annie and Finnick were also reunited after a long time of not seeing each other. Boggs approaches Katniss and Haymitch to say that they have Peeta with them, easing them of their worry. They come over to see Peeta. When he sees Katniss, he gets up and hurriedly goes over to Katniss, but instead of kissing her, he tries to strangle her.

Another manipulation of President Snow has been revealed. The reason why Finnick had strings of admirers wasn’t just because of his good looks, it was President Snow selling him to powerful people
