Chapter 3

Katniss returns back to the sleeping quarters and ends up getting up to look for her special objects inside her dresser. She finds and caresses the pearl that Peeta gave to her. Her sister Prim wakes up and asked her what was wrong. Katniss realizes that her younger sister has grown up a lot ever since they left District 12. She admits to Prim that she’s finally decided to become the Mockingjay and that she’s really worried about Peeta. Prim reassures her that she has the power to make the revolutionaries keep Peeta safe from harm. Katniss realizes that if she wants Peeta to remain safe, she needs to give out her conditions in front of a lot of people so as to prevent it from being denied.

The next morning, Katniss meets up with Gale during breakfast. She thinks about getting permission for the two of them to hunt outside. She creates a list of things that she wants to ask from District 13. They go over to the Command and presented the list to the revolutionaries. They agreed to let Katniss and Gale hunt outside, as well as to let Prim keep Buttercup with her in the quarters. The revolutionaries then remind Katniss about the complication of her relationships with both Peeta and Gale. They tell her that they still need to make it seem as if Katniss and Peeta are still madly in love. She decides to add in a request for the revolutionaries to award pardons to Peeta and the other tributes from the arena once the war against the Capitol is won. She threatened them that she won’t become the Mockingjay if they deny her request. As a final request, she tells the revolutionaries that she wants to be one who kills President Snow.

After the meeting, President Coin and the revolutionaries leave Command. Katniss, Gale, Fulvia, and Plutarch then start discussing plans regarding Katniss’ new status as the Mockingjay. Plutarch shows Katniss some costumes designed by Cinna before his death, reminding her that Cinna still believes in Katniss even after he has already passed. Plutarch reveals that Katniss needs to star in commercials called “propos” that’s going to promote the cause of the revolutionaries. Fulvia mentions that they have to think hard about Katniss’ image once it becomes publicly known that she’ll be the Mockingjay. After their conversation, the group find themselves going further to an area of the district that they’ve never been to before. Security tried to stop them, but Katniss and Gale managed to evade them. They ended up breaking into a closed room and discovered that the district is keeping the people who helped Katniss prepare for the arena as prisoners.

Notes:
Katniss contemplates about getting permission to hunt outside with Gale. She readies herself for the preparation to become the Mockingjay. It’s unfortunate that she saw her old prep team being held captive, as Katniss doesn’t really approve of holding people against their will.

Chapter 4

Katniss prep team from the games—Octavia, Venia, and Flavius—have all been treated poorly and beaten. She asks them what happened and Venia reveals that rebels from District 13 kidnapped them when Katniss escaped from the Quarter Quell. Plutarch tells them that it was Cinna’s idea to have the three taken away, but didn’t know that the three of them would be treated that badly. The only reason they were imprisoned was because they stole some food. Katniss demands for them to be released, with Plutarch backing her up. They take the three prisoners to Katniss’ mother at the hospital to have them examined. Katniss thinks that this is President Coin’s way of showing citizens from Capitol that they’re not powerful in District 13. Katniss mother tells them that the team is all right, but won’t be able to do anything about them until the next morning.

Katniss and Gale have their midday meal and goes out to hunt right after. They’re only given a limited time to be outside and have trackers put on their body so that the people from District 13 can detect where they are. They pass through a protective fence and feel relieved that they can finally experience something that they used to do together back in District 12. After hunting, they start talking about the things that worry Katniss so much. Gale thinks it doesn’t make sense that Katniss has to worry about the prep team. They disagree and return underground.

Katniss and her family were assigned to new sleeping quarters, somewhere with the window so the cat can go out from time to time. After a nap, Katniss and her family attend a meeting where all of District 13 is required to attend. Katniss sees Finnick amongst the crowd and hollers out to him. He still appears to be mentally incapacitated, which reminds Katniss to seek protection for Annie, Finnick’s lover who has gone mad. Katniss approaches President Coin directly and decides that she really has to persuade the president into accepting all of the terms she has listed. Coin announces to everyone in the meeting that Katniss is now the Mockingjay, the symbol of the revolution. She explains all of the terms and conditions about their agreements and reveals that if Katniss fails to follow their orders, the whole deal is off.

Notes:
Katniss feels normal again once she’s done hunting with Gale. However, they get into an argument again, which is evident about Gale’s frustration towards Katniss for worrying so much about Peeta.
