Summary

As this chapter opens, Lafeyette is packing up his meager belongings in a cardboard box. Four weeks earlier, he had been arrested with four other boys for allegedly breaking into a Toyota. Lafeyette insisted he hadn't done it, but had been walking by when it happened and was swept up in the arrest. Today is their first day in court. LaJoe tries not to show it, but she is as worried as Lafeyette. She doesn't think she can last through another child going to jail.
