Andreeson had twisted the arm of the weak-willed chief of the state troopers, a man named Muriel, and a disproportionate number of troopers were ordered to the gas stations of Mandan, where was sure Dad would drive. However, they don't capture them, because even though the Lands see them, the troopers don't see the Lands. Swede says that Dad is like Moses parting the Red Sea. While the two kids ruminate over Dad as Moses, Swede admits that she had sabotaged Andreeson's car by putting maple syrup in his gas tank. It's their first act of war against the enemy.
Next, they park 10 miles outside of Mandan, because Dad has another
monster headache. The problem is that it's Saturday night and the gas
stations will be closed on Sunday. So Dad asks Swede if she's going to
pray that night. She tells him yes and he says he will, too, and that
they must ask Him to save them some gas. They go to bed with all the blankets
they have, but the two kids are still cold. So Swede, who is not tired,
begins to pretend she is a movie star blowing smoke rings. It is so silly
that they both begin to laugh and laugh........
