1. Write
an essay describing the first encounter between Sophie and Langdon from Sophie's
perspective. Is she sure he is innocent? How does she remain calm at the scene
of her grandfather's murder?
2. What do you think happens to Teabing? Does he use his money to get out of going to jail? If he does not go to jail will he try to find the Grail? Do you think he will be successful?
3. How do you think Rémy and Teabing met? Does Rémy have a family? What might he have done if the Grail was found? Do you think he would have killed Teabing and taken all of the money for himself?
4. What do you think happens with Langdon and Sophie? Will they meet in Italy? Will they get married? Will Langdon tell her where the Grail is hidden?
5. Brown makes a painstaking effort to establish Sophie as an intelligent character throughout the novel and he also makes a point of showing how the brotherhood trusted Sister Sandrine to help protect the Grail. It is clear that both of these women have a special intuition, which Brown calls women's intuition. However, at the novel's conclusion he shows how Silas has relied on his instincts to survive, thus drawing a parallel between the intelligent women and the brute. Is this problematic? Is there a difference between women's intuition and gut instinct?
6. Examine Lee Teabing from a psychological perspective. What motivates his fanaticism? Is there a difference between his fanaticism for the Grail and Silas's religious fanaticism?
7. In French, collet means noose. Is there any significance in Lieutenant Collet's name? In French the word neveu means nephew. Is there any significance in Sophie Neveu's name?
8. If you found the Grail, what would you do with it? Do agree with Marie and Langdon, that it is important to have faith in something whether it is true or not?
9. Is Fache a flat character? Is he more than a controlling boss? Is the nickname bull accurate?
10. Are there any examples in this novel of how power corrupts? Consider the historical role of the Catholic Church (as it is portrayed in the novel), what Teabing's money can buy, and Fache's initial actions in the investigation.
