In early December, when night comes so early, Jamie begins asking Landon
to walk her home after play practice. He finds that unusual since their
town is so safe, but her home is on the way to his, so he doesn't know
how to say no. They talk about the play as they walk and Landon is reminded
about how everyone but him is so excited about it. They think it's going
to be the best performance ever. All Landon wants is his former life back
and hangs in there only because he thinks he's doing the right thing.
Jamie also asks him about his friends and him going to the graveyard at
night. She wonders if he ever worries, like she would, that he might do
something wrong. She even wonders if he ever lies on his back and just
stares at the stars. To Landon, the questions are unbelievable: it's obvious
Jamie doesn't understand teenagers, even though she is one, and she especially
doesn't understand teenage boys. But she insists that that's what she
would do - look at the stars - if she ever went there. She says all this

Each night that Landon walks Jamie home, he is under a kind of subtle to pressure to look at the true nature of his own character. She presents to him ideas that he has never considered, ways to live that have never occurred to him, and thoughts about the future that he hasn't taken the time to think about. He also learns new things about her, like her...........
