His return from Europe furthered emphasized for Booker the fact that his life had been one of continual surprises. Yet another surprise came in the form of General Armstrong who expressed a desire to see Tuskegee once more before he died. He was almost completely paralyzed but plans were hatched to find a way to get him there. The students set up a “pine-knot torchlight reception” and he stayed for nearly two months with Booker. Even in his weakened state, he never stopped thinking about how to help the South overcome the freeing of the slaves. A few weeks after he returned home, he died and at his funeral, Booker met Rev. Dr. Hollis B. Frissell, the new Principal of the Hampton Institute. Booker was impressed by how the man hid his own great personality behind that of General Armstrong.
The second surprise that Booker received was an invitation to Harvard to be awarded an honorary degree. He was overcome by this honor, insisting that he had never sought out fame and it all nearly overcame him. He was to be honored along with many influential people in America including Alexander Graham Bell. Harvard never revealed the names of the people to be honored until they appeared on the platform. When Booker entered, the reaction of the audience was overwhelming. He received a Master of Arts degree and later, all the honorary degree recipients were escorted through the grounds of ........
