CHAPTER EIGHT

Summary

This chapter opens on the night of the play. Landon has been trying to apologize to Jamie for his outburst, but she slips away from him at school and elsewhere before he can catch up to her. When Landon arrives at the theatre, Jamie is talking with her father and Miss Garber. She doesn’t smile at him as she usually does and he has to interrupt their conversation in order to finally apologize. To make her believe his apology is sincere, he promises to “make it up to her.” That makes her smile and they break apart, at Miss Garber’s urging to begin the play, with wishes of “break a leg,” theatre jargon for “Good luck.”

Before the play begins, Landon speaks to Eric who asks him if he’s going to do the play “straight up.” Landon nods yes, because doing..........

CHAPTER NINE

Summary

Obviously, the play is a smashing success. Landon looks for Jamie after the curtains are closed for the final time and sees her with her father. Hegbert has tears in his eyes and holds her very close, while he murmurs, “My angel,” and strokes her hair. Landon is so moved that he says to himself that the “right thing” isn’t so bad after all. She receives all her congratulations very modestly and then thanks Landon for making her father very happy. That’s when Landon realizes that he wishes he were going to be the one driving her home, instead of her father.

Landon is disappointed when Jamie comes to school on Monday looking just the same as..........
